Where To Buy Large Christmas Stockings

A. Stockings were originally stuffed with food items, such as nuts and oranges. Over the years, people started stuffing them with surprise gifts and added a few hidden items to open Christmas morning. Now, there are giant stockings that allow users to fit extra-large gifts rather than just small foods.

What you need to know: These large Christmas stockings are made with durably knitted material and are taller than they are wide. They can be used to hold stocking stuffers or as decor.

An unsubstantiated claim is that the Christmas stocking custom derived from the Germanic/Scandinavian figure Odin. According to Phyllis Siefker, children would place their boots, filled with carrots, straw, or sugar, near the chimney for Odin's flying horse, Sleipnir, to eat. Odin would reward those children for their kindness by replacing Sleipnir's food with gifts or candy.[8] This practice, she claims, survived in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands after the adoption of Christianity and became associated with Saint Nicholas as a result of the process of Christianization. This claim is doubtful as there are no records of stocking filling practices related to Odin until there is a merging of St. Nicholas with Odin. St. Nicholas had an earlier merging with the Grandmother cult in Bari, Italy where the grandmother would put gifts in stockings. This merged St. Nicholas would later travel north and merge with the Odin cults.[9]

Today, stores carry a large variety of styles and sizes of Christmas stockings, and Christmas stockings are also a popular homemade craft. Many families create their own Christmas stockings with each family member's name applied to the stocking so that Santa will know which stocking belongs to which family member.

Embroider each loved one's name with personalized Christmas stockings. A great pick for large families to help keep track of whose is whose. When it comes to styling your favorite christmas stockings, go for the traditional look with red and green stockings. Or, go for a whimsical feel with either white or blue and hang with decorative Christmas stocking holders. Once your personalized stockings are all hung by the chimney with care, don't forget the Christmas stocking stuffers. Fruit, candy, ornaments and other petite treats are all traditional items to include. If you plan to include bigger gifts as well, large Christmas stockings are easily filled to the brim with delightful presents. No matter how you stuff or style your personalized stockings, they are a great way to add some Christmas cheer to your home. Show off your Southwest style with these stunning stockings. A colorful sock pattern becomes an adorable stocking with the use of a thicker weight yarn and a larger pair of needles. The design calls for stranded colorwork and it is worked from the top down with a short row heel. Scroll down to find the pattern near the middle of the page.

These simple stockings are knit from the top down with a heel flap. You will only be working with the main color when you make the stocking. Then you go back and add the image on the front using the duplicate stitch technique and an accent color. You get to choose between snowflake, christmas tree, and reindeer designs.

I made this christmas stocking tutorial a bit different from the usual stocking tutorials, to make it even easier, and it's also a bit because I'm always looking for the most efficient way to use less fabric - with the same, or even better visual effect. Check out how the no-fold cuff is constructed - easier and faster to sew, using up less fabric than other same-sized stockings with cuffs folded back.

I just finished 3 stockings and absolutely LOVE the clever cuff trick. What a time-saver! The instructions and photos are precise and fool-proof. It took me about 20 minutes per stocking (excluding the embroidery on the cuffs, which I did ahead of time and then trimmed to size using a tissue paper template). Also, I did the same as another reader and tucked a ribbon in between the cuffs before stitching so that I didn't have to put in the extra time making the loop and stitching it onto the finished cuff. Next time around I will enlarge the pattern by 10-15% because I would have liked something a bit bigger. I'm looking forward to cranking out a bunch more of these (including a kitty-size) to send to friends and family.

that's awesome, thanks! Did you know I have just published a larger free pattern too It's in the same PDF file as the first stocking you used, and you can find the tutorial here: -to-make-a-christmas-stocking/Happy sewing,Damjana
